To study in Canada as an International Student, one needs Study Permit. Each province and territory of Canada has its own “streams” (immigration programs that target certain groups) and requirements. Provinces and territories can also invite/select candidates from the Canada Express Entry Pool through their Provincial Nominee Programs to meet local labor market needs. Closed work permits are employer-specific. In most cases, applicants will first require a job offer before they can apply for a Canadian work permit. In the vast majority of cases, the first step towards obtaining a Canadian work permit is to apply for a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC).

Most employers need an LMIA before they can hire a temporary foreign worker. A positive LMIA confirms:

Reunification of Family: Family reunification is comprised of programs that allow eligible sponsors to bring their family members to Canada as permanent residents. It is a longstanding component of Canada’s immigration system, reflecting the objective of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, “to see that families are reunited in Canada”. Categories of persons who may obtain permanent residency through family reunification include:
- Spouses and common-law partners
- Parents and grandparents
- Dependent children: defined largely as under age 22; biological or adopted, including intercountry adoptions
- Other relatives, in special circumstances: e.g. orphaned relatives under 18
